Financing the initial purchase of the land

The cost of buying the land will be one of the biggest hurdles in starting our Gardens of Love community.

Possible sources of money are:

  • Investments from the Gardians. While some of the Gardians will hopefully be able to invest in the project, in my experience the one thing stopping many people who are keen to start growing their own small holding or permaculture garden, is the financing. That means that investment from Gardians can’t be expected to be the sole source of money to finance this project.
  • Crowdfunding, where many people give a relatively small amount, that together becomes a substantial amount of funding, can be an effective way to get a wider public to take an interest in the project. They could be offered incentives like credit for courses, and tours of the project etc.
  • Investment  from other interested parties, who can see the benefits of the project, but don’t themselves want to become Gardians.
    • This can also happen in the form of legacies etc.
  • Government funding for:
    • community projects
    • Education
    • Caring for disadvantaged young people and possibly people with learning disabilities
  • The lottery fund for community projects.
  • Fund-Raising through a store: we have set up a fund-raising shop to help raise funds for advertising and reaching more people and to start getting some funds together for buying land. Find out more in our article here.

It is likely that a mix of these sources will be needed to get enough money together to make the project reality.
